VIDEO: 49ers Have a Nose Tackle Fielding Punts During Practice
By Max Staley
The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most well-coached teams in the league. They excel in pretty much all facets of the game, including special teams, where they finished with a top-12 special teams DVOA according to Football Outsiders.
Part of the reason for that might be that San Francisco apparently practices for any and all situations, including a fan favorite – the big man punt return.
Nose tackle D.J. Jones is the one fielding the punt here, and he's moving way better than a 305-pound man should. He only played 30 percent of the team's defensive snaps last year, but perhaps he's found his true calling as a punt returner.
If he somehow ends up with the ball in his hands this season, Jones looks like a real threat to score the ever-elusive big man touchdown.
