LEARN MOREHow to bet the 2026 Kentucky Derby
There are many ways to bet on the Kentucky Derby. The most simple bets are called straight wagers: win, place, or show. A win bet is when your horse finishes first, offering a chance for a significant payout if betting on a longshot. A place bet means your horse finishes in the top two, and a show bet is when your horse comes in the top three, each with a $2 minimum.
There are also more complex bets called exotic wagers. These involve predicting the order of multiple horses (vertical wagers) or the winners of several races (horizontal wagers). Vertical wagers include exacta, trifecta, superfecta, and Super High Five, where you predict the first two, three, four, or five horses in order, respectively. The minimum bets are $2 for exacta (with $1 for additional combinations), $0.50 for trifecta, and $1 for both superfecta and Super High Five.
Horizontal wagers involve betting on multiple races, such as the Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6. The minimum bets are $1 for Daily Double, $0.50 for Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 5, and $0.20 per combination for Pick 6.
LEARN MOREKENTUCKY DERBY BETTING LINES & FUTURES
One of the most important factors when betting on the Kentucky Derby is determining whether a horse offers good value. Like other U.S. horse races, the Derby uses a pari-mutuel system, meaning the betting lines fluctuate based on where the public is putting their money. Horses with more betting action become favorites, leading to smaller potential payouts. Less money on a horse means it’s considered a long shot, with a higher potential return.
The Kentucky Derby post draw will take place after the final prep race April 2026. Until then, you can get an idea of which horses are expected to take betting interest by considering future odds . Some sportsbooks in Las Vegas take Kentucky Derby futures action, and Churchill Downs offered six pari-mutuel Kentucky Derby Future Wager pools as well.
The 2026 Kentucky Derby post draw will take place on Saturday, April 25, giving bettors a full week to analyze the field with official post positions and morning line odds. Those morning lines offer a solid projection of where odds might land—but they’re not locked in. Betting opens at 9:00 a.m. EDT the Friday before the Derby, and from there, it’s all about watching the board. Odds shift right up until post time, with final prices locked once the gates fly and the race is on.
HOW TO BET THE KENTUCKY DERBY
You have a full range of options for betting the Kentucky Derby.
If you want to keep things simple, you can play a straight wager: win, place, or show. Win wagers pay off if your horse wins. A place wager usually pays less than a win bet, but it pays if your horse finishes in the top two. A show usually pays less than a place wager, but you win if your horse finishes first, second, or third. It is a $2 minimum bet for win, place, and show wagers on the Kentucky Derby.
You can also play a multitude of exotic wagers on the Kentucky Derby. Exotics require you to either pick the first several horses across the wire (vertical wagers) or pick the winners of multiple races (horizontal wagers).
Vertical exotic options for the Kentucky Derby include an exacta, trifecta, superfecta, and Super High Five. These require you to pick the first two, three, four, or five horses across the wire, respectively. For an exacta, it is a $2 minimum bet on a single combination, though you can play multiple combinations for as low as $1 per combination. The trifecta is a $0.50 minimum bet. For the Kentucky Derby, both the superfecta and Super High Five have a $1 minimum.
Horizontal options include the Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6. The Daily Double has a $1 minimum. Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 5 have a $0.50 minimum, while you can bet a Pick 6 for just $0.20 per combination. In addition to traditional horizontal sequences, Churchill Downs offers special sequences with other major stakes races. Special sequences they have offered in recent years include:
- A $1.00 Daily Double with the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby
- A $0.50 Pick 3 with the Kentucky Oaks, Turf Classic, and Kentucky Derby
- A $0.50 all-dirt-stakes Pick 5

KENTUCKY DERBY PREP RACES
The Road to the Kentucky Derby is Churchill Downs’ points-based qualifying system for the race. It includes designated prep races at tracks across the U.S. and internationally, with points awarded to the top five finishers in each race. Those standings determine the preference list for the 20-horse Kentucky Derby field.
Prep races begin in September with the Iroquois (G3) at Churchill Downs and run until April. In general, prep races nearest in time to the Run for the Roses are worth more points, with final preps like the Florida Derby (G1), Blue Grass (G1), Santa Anita Derby (G1), and Arkansas Derby (G1) offering enough points that their winners and even second-place finishers are practically guaranteed a spot in the starting gate. If a tie in points standings occurs, the horse with higher non-restricted stakes earnings gets priority.

How much does it cost to bet the Kentucky Derby?

- Win, Place, Show – $2 minimum
- Exacta – $2 minimum straight bet ($1 boxes and wheels)
- Trifecta – $0.50 minimum
- Superfecta – $1 minimum
- Daily Double – $1 minimum
- Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5 – $0.50 minimum
- Pick 6 – $0.20 per combination
You can start with just a few dollars, but more complex bets can cost more depending on how many combinations you play.
When does Kentucky Derby betting open?
Advance betting for the Kentucky Derby typically opens at 9:00 a.m. EDT on the Friday before the race. For the 2026 Kentucky Derby, betting opens on Friday, May 1, 2026.
From that point, odds continue to change right up until post time on race day as more bets are placed.
When is post time for the Kentucky Derby?
Post time for the 2026 Kentucky Derby is scheduled for approximately 6:57 p.m. EDT on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
How many horses are in the Kentucky Derby?
The Kentucky Derby field is limited to 20 starters, though Derby Week can begin with also-eligible horses on standby. In 2025, 21 horses were entered at the post draw, with Baeza listed as the lone also-eligible.
If a starter scratches before Friday morning’s official scratch time, the also-eligible horse can move into the field. That is why the AE list still matters every year—and why Rich Strike’s 2022 Derby win from that spot remains such a standout example.
What is a Daily Double in Kentucky Derby betting?
A Daily Double asks you to pick the winners of two designated races. One popular Derby-week option is a Daily Double linking the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby.
It is one of the best ways to add more excitement if you want action across two major races while keeping your ticket simpler than a Pick 3 or Pick 4.
What does exact order mean in Kentucky Derby bets?
Exact order means your horses must finish in the precise order listed on your ticket. For example, an exacta requires the top two finishers in order, a trifecta requires the top three finishers in order, and a superfecta requires the top four finishers in order.
These bets can produce bigger payouts, but they are harder to hit because both the finishing positions and the order must be right.
I won my sports bet or horse racing bet. Where are my winnings?
Horse racing is one of the most exciting and unique sports in betting, from the Kentucky Derby to the Belmont Stakes and beyond.
But it can also be a bit complicated sometimes.
FanDuel and all other sports betting providers rely on official statistics and results from leagues like the NFL or NBA. Horse racing is a little different depending on race course tracks and governing bodies, and it can include post-race inspection, video replay, and much more.
Because of this, it can take a little longer for any winnings to end up in your account following a race compared to other sports. This is called "bet settlement."
We must wait on any official results in case there are no disqualifications or issues with the confirmed outcome of the race.
What kind of bets can I make in the Derby?
You can make the same kinds of bets on the Kentucky Derby that you can on any horse race: straight bets (win, place, show), exotic bets (exacta, trifecta, superfecta, Super High Five), and pick wagers (Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6). In addition, Churchill Downs often offers special wagers that cover the Kentucky Derby, such as a Daily Double between the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby.
How do I understand the odds?
Betting on horse races is pari-mutuel: this means the odds are based on how people are betting. If more money is bet on a horse, the price will be shorter; if little money is bet on a horse, then the odds will be higher. Note also that odds on American races like the Kentucky Derby are phrased in terms of the multiple of profit you will get over the money you originally bet. For example, if a horse wins the Kentucky Derby at 5-1 odds, that means the horse will pay $12 to win: $10 worth of winnings, plus your original $2 stake. Learn more about Kentucky Derby Odds.
Who won the Kentucky Derby in 2025?
The powerhouse Sovereignty picked the perfect moment to shine, surging past the favorites in the final stretch to capture the 2025 Kentucky Derby by 1 1/2 lengths over Journalism and Baeza. The victory gave trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado a career-defining win, while securing a historic weekend double for owner Godolphin, who had won the Kentucky Oaks the previous day with Good Cheer—marking the first time a sole owner swept both races since 1952.
