Making your MLB debut is already stressful enough, but it's even more intimidating when you have to do it on the road in front of a hostile crowd.

The Minnesota Twins will see if one of their top pitching prospects, Louie Varland, is up to the challenge. They're bringing him up to start Wednesday's game against the Yankees, when he'll become the first pitcher in franchise history to start his first-ever MLB game at Yankee Stadium.

With Sonny Gray's scheduled start getting pushed back from Wednesday to Thursday, the Twins needed a pitcher for Wednesday and decided to give Varland a shot. He's currently ranked as the team's No. 10 overall prospect on MLB.com and No. 5 pitching prospect.

The 24-year-old right-hander was named the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2021 after going 10-4 with a 2.10 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and 142 strikeouts in 103 innings split between Single-A and High-A. He continued to progress this year, posting an 8-5 record with a 3.06 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 126 1/3 innings across Double-A and Triple-A.

After excelling at every level of the minor leagues, Varland appears ready for The Show. Minnesota is hoping he can provide an instant spark for its playoff push, as the Twins are currently just one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the AL Central. After leading the division for much of the summer, Minnesota has seen its odds of winning the AL Central slip to +240 on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds.

Varland will go up against Domingo German, who's 2-3 with a 3.12 ERA in nine starts this year. He'll also face a Yankees offense that has scored the most runs in the American League and is led by AL MVP frontrunner Aaron Judge.

New York has been reeling lately with a 12-20 record since the beginning of August, however, so perhaps Varland can help extend their slump a little longer.
