After receiving hype as a legitimate Super Bowl contender all offseason, Dallas Cowboys fans have to be frustrated with their 1-3 start.

It's also crystal-clear which part of the team is letting them down — their defense has been abysmal through four games. Cowboys legend Troy Aikman was not shy about ripping the defense after their Week 4 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

That's harsh, because Aikman isn't just calling them out as an overmatched group that's in over their head without enough talent. He's specifically calling out their effort — something that's fully in the control of even the most mediocre NFL players.

And it's not hard to see where Aikman is coming from. This may not be the exact same group of players that held opponents to the ninth-fewest yards per game and 10th fewest yards per play in 2019, but the personnel isn't so different that the drop-off should be this dramatic. The Cowboys have given up the most points (146) and third-most yards (1,722) as well as the 11th-most yards per play (6.0) in 2020.

Dak Prescott and the offense are doing their all to carry this team, and Dak has thrown for more than 450 yards in three straight games, with Dallas eclipsing 30 points in all three. The defense hasn't even come close to pulling their weight.

Hopefully hearing a shot like this from one of the greatest Cowboys of all time lights a fire under this defense and they start playing up to the level they're capable of.
