The Tennessee Titans have reached a monumental step in their quest for a new stadium. The team has come to an agreement with Nashville Mayor John Cooper. The new project is expected to cost roughly $2.2 billion and will generate hundreds of millions in projected revenue for the city and private businesses. It would be located just east of the current Nissan Stadium site.

While this is a big step, there are also still plenty of hurdles to get over before they break ground. Mainly, the plan has to be approved by Metro Council. The same council that was promised Nissan Stadium, the Titans current home would last decades longer than it has, currently just 23 years old.

That age may seem like an infancy for a stadium, and it is, but there's one main problem with Nissan Stadium. It fails to put Nashville in position to host the Super Bowl College Football National Championship Games, music festivals and other concerts and large events. Nashville, in all other aspects, is a perfect fit for all of those mentioned events, which are currently many times going to cities like Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami and Tampa.

There are surely questions Metro Council will have and potentially some changes to the plan, but unlike with Nissan Stadium, the public won't have a say in this one. The Titans have secured $800 million in private funding for the project, but the rest will be on the city and subsidized through various taxes and businesses.

If this goes through it will be expensive, but could be an enormous boost to the Titans and the economics of Nashville.
