Tevin Coleman Injury Points to Fantasy Value Boost for Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert

The San Francisco 49ers have had bad luck with expensive, free agent running backs recently. In 2018, they signed Jerick McKinnon, who missed the entire 2018 season due to an ACL tear. Complications from that surgery will also cause him to miss the entire 2019 campaign.

The team's latest high-priced acquisition, Tevin Coleman, sprained his ankle in his 49ers debut and will now likely be forced to miss some time.

While Coleman's timetable to return is not yet clear, both Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert could provide fantasy value in his absence.

Matt Breida Fantasy Outlook in Week 2

Breida was far from effective in Week 1, but he could be a low-end RB2 if Coleman is forced to miss Week 2. He was solid when filling in for McKinnon in 2018, tallying 1,075 yards from scrimmage and five TDs in 14 games.

The 49ers' passing game was a bit of a disaster in Week 1, which could certainly impact Breida's value, but the 5-foot-9 RB overcame a similarly ineffective passing attack last season to average 5.3 yards per carry. He won't be an RB1 any time soon, but Breida could be a reliable player with Coleman sidelined.

Raheem Mostert Fantasy Outlook

One potential roadblock to Breida's success, however, could be Mostert. Mostert was one of the few bright spots for the 49ers offense in Week 1, as he tallied 40 rushing yards on nine carries.

It looks like the 49ers are going to use a running-back-by-committee approach to replace Coleman, as Mostert received 10 touches to Breida's 15. As long as Coleman is out, Mostert could provide some fantasy value as a low-end flex option in 12-team leagues.

While neither running back carries as much upside as Coleman, both Mostert and Breida could provide some low-end fantasy value with him sidelined.
