Nothing is worse than losing your ace in the middle of a pennant race, which is what appeared to happen to the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday.

AL Cy Young candidate Shane McClanahan was a late scratch from his scheduled start against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. McClanahan was warming up in the bullpen prior to the game when he suffered a left shoulder impingement, forcing the visibly upset southpaw off the field.

Shane McClanahan Injury Update

Fortunately for the Rays and their fans, McClanahan's injury does not appear to be too serious.

McClanahan is expected to undergo an MRI, but the team does not believe his injury is significant. If that's the case, he may not need to miss much time and could return at some point in September.

Rays News

The Rays are currently second in the AL East and lead the AL Wild Card standings by half a game over the Seattle Mariners. Every game is vitally important for them at this point, which is why McClanahan's injury was initially so concerning.

McClanahan has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this year. going 11-5 with a 2.20 ERA and the eighth-most pitching WAR (3.8) in the majors, per FanGraphs.

If McClanahan does end up missing time, it would be quite damaging to Tampa Bay's postseason chances. The Rays currently have the fifth-best odds of winning the American League (+1600) on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds.
