Head coach Dennis Allen has already announced that quarterback Andy Dalton will start for the New Orleans Saints against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 6. A Jameis Winston sighting cannot be ruled out, though, as he will be active and in uniform on the sideline serving as the team's emergency QB.
New Orleans Saints News
Winston has been inactive for the last two weeks as he continues to work his way back from multiple fractures in his back and an ankle injury. He was able to participate in a limited fashion during all three of the Saint's practices this week, which means his return as a starter seems to be on the horizon.
It's worth pointing out that an injury to Dalton wouldn't guarantee Winston sees snaps behind center. Tight end Taysom Hill has prior experience running the Saints' offense as a QB and has excelled in 2022 as a jack-of-all-trades. Of course, Allen is hoping that decision doesn't have to made at all.
Dalton has been serviceable across two starts, logging 423 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. It's a lack of healthy weapons in the passing attack that is keeping the offense at bay. Winston tallied 858 passing yards, 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions in his three starts before he went down.
This move by New Orleans does prevent the team from having to release a contributing player in order to call up a practice squad quarterback. With the Saints slated for Thursday Night Football action in Week 7, Winston's improvement will need to be at an all-time high for him to be ready to go.
The Saints are slated as a 3-point home underdog against the Bengals, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
