The New Orleans Saints earned a resounding 38-3 victory over the Green Bay Packers to kick off their 2021 season. The win sent the rest of the league a message, but it wasn't a win on all accounts.
Two key defenders suffered injuries in Sunday's contest, which could put a strain on that unit moving forward.
Marshon Lattimore Injury
Star cornerback Marshon Lattimore suffered a thumb injury against the Packers, and he is going under the knife to repair it. He will miss "a couple weeks," according to Ian Rapoport, which is disappointing news after he just agreed to a massive five-year extension with the team.
This is another blow to the Saints' secondary after Brian Poole and Ken Crawley were both placed on IR. One crumb of good news is that offseason addition Bradley Roby will be eligible to play in Week 2 after the completion of his six-game suspension stemming from last year.
Marcus Davenport Injury
Besides Lattimore, pass-rusher Marcus Davenport picked up a pectoral injury against Green Bay. Injuries limited him to just 11 games in 2020, and it's unclear how serious his new ailment is at the moment. Either way, it's a cause for concern with this defense already down one key figure in Lattimore.
Davenport got his season off to a solid start with 2 tackles for loss and a sack in Week 1. Saints fans will eagrly await an update on his status before a Week 2 clash against the Carolina Panthers.
