The official window for MLB free agency opens on Thursday, pushing the offseason into full swing. All 30 teams around baseball will look for important roster upgrades via free agency, the trade market or internal candidates.

That includes the Kansas City Royals, who introduced a new manager, Matt Quatraro, to lead the franchise earlier this month.

Royals GM J.J. Picollo recently spoke about his club's offseason efforts and laid out a few of the biggest priorities heading into the winter.

Kansas City Royals News

Picollo indicated that adding a right-handed veteran bat sits atop the list. As with all other 29 teams around baseball, pitching is a priority as well. Kansas City will always attempt to improve the pitching staff, but adding a right-handed bat is of utmost importance.

"We have a lot of flexibility with the positional guys. A lot of guys that can play a lot of different positions. It doesn’t pigeonhole us into saying, ‘We need to go get this position.’ I think we’re thinking more right-handed bat more so than left-handed," said Picollo.

It'll be interesting to see who the Royals identify as a fit per Picollo's model. Some names that come to mind include Jean Segura, Brandon Drury or Aledmys Diaz. Those are more affordable mid-range free agents, as opposed to superstars like Trea Turner or Carlos Correa. Given the team's budget constraints, It's hard to imagine Kansas City making a serious push at players expected to get more than $30 million in average annual value (AAV).
