After holding first place for nearly the entire month of July, the Boston Red Sox have faltered with a 2-8 record over their past 10 ball games. Now, Boston sits 2.5 games back in the AL East standings and some issues have been raised regarding the team's health.

On Saturday, it was revealed that slugger J.D. Martinez has been added to the COVID injured list, joining exciting prospect Jarren Duran. This is a precautionary move according to MLB protocols, with both suffering potential COVID-19 symptoms.

However, the Red Sox have yet to confirm test results for either player, which leaves the possibility of both returning if the test results are returned negative.

Red Sox COVID Update

Either way, missing the pair of Duran and Martinez will be a major hole in the Red Sox lineup. Duran, a Red Sox top prospect, has slashed just .176/.204/.353 since being called up in July. But, the young outfielder has shown flashes of brilliance with a 2 home runs, 5 RBIs, and some solid defense.

Martinez, on the other hand, has been a force at the plate following a disappointing 2020 campaign. Through 104 games, the 33-year-old DH/OF is slashing .284/.350/.525 with 21 home runs and 68 RBIs.

Boston will look to stop their current slide in the standings with a trio of games against the Toronto Blue Jays to close out the weekend. Boston owns +190 odds to win the AL East and +1600 odds to win the World Series, according to the latest MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
