For most of the Tampa Bay Rays' history, they have been dominated by their division rival New York Yankees. That hasn't been surprising, as the Rays were an expansion, small-market team without the financial resources to consistently compete.

However, with a great scouting department and front office, the Rays have managed to put together a few really great teams over the years, including in 2008 when they made it all the way to the World Series.

In 2020, we're seeing something similar. The Rays have once again fielded a great team, looking like a legitimate contender, and they have been dominating those same Yankees across the board.

Anytime you have an .800 winning percentage, you must be doing something right. While the Yankees are dealing with another year of unparalleled injuries, they have really great depth, so a performance like this shouldn't be happening.

The stat that jumps out the most is the difference in batting average with runners in scoring position. Getting hits in the right moments is how you score runs and win games. The Yankees simply haven't executed.

As the playoff race heats up over the last few weeks of the season, the Yankees trail the Rays by 4.5 games, but only three in the loss column. If the Rays can keep up their wining ways, they could hold off the Yankees and capture the AL East crown in 2020.

Despite their head-to-head record, the Yankees are still the favorites (at +250) to win the American League in 2020, while the Rays rank second at +400 on FanDuel Sportsbook.
