Rays Finally Make the Right Decision With Ryan Yarbrough
The 2022 MLB season has Tampa Bay Rays left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough experiencing his worst season on the mound to date. The 30-year-old southpaw is winless in seven appearances (six starts) so far, making it clear that he needs a major change to get back on track.
Staying in the Majors is no longer an option for Yarbrough, which is why the Rays optioned him to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday. The hope is that some time in the minors will help him rebound and potentially get called back up later this year.
Ryan Yarbrough Rays News
Rays fans are thrilled about Yarbrough's demotion after his performance on Sunday was the straw that broke the camel's back. The Austin, TX native was the main reason that Tampa Bay lost to the Chicago White Sox, giving up six earned runs on eight hits over only 1.2 innings pitched.
Yarbrough is now 0-3 in his seven games played so far this season, pitching to a putrid 5.65 ERA and 1.535 WHIP over 28.2 IP. The 10.7 hits per nine IP is the worst among the Rays' starters, further proving that his being optioned was inevitable.
Right-handed pitcher Luke Bard has been called up from Durham to take Yarbrough's roster spot. The former 2012 first-round pick hasn't pitched in the Majors since 2020 but has looked good this season with a 2.81 ERA and 0.813 WHIP in 15 Triple-A relief appearances in 2022.
Bard isn't a starter, though, so it's likely that Shane Baz will replace Yarbrough in Tampa Bay's rotation. The 22-year-old has been on the 60-day injured list with an elbow injury, however, his rehab has been going phenomenally and all signs point to his 2022 MLB debut being right around the corner.
