Pittsburgh Pirates fans have been clamoring for top prospect Oneil Cruz to earn another call-up after debuting last season. With Cruz producing in Triple-A and Pittsburgh a disappointing 1-9 over its last 10 games, it makes all the sense in the world to let him get some extended run in the majors.
Well, it appears fans' wishes may come true very soon.
Oneil Cruz Call-Up
Pirates GM Ben Cherrington told 937 The Fan on Sunday Cruz is "really close" to earning some MLB action. Cherrington teased a move could come in the "next few days", which is sure to stir the Pittsburgh faithful into a frenzy.
Cruz made a serious push in Spring Training to begin the year in the big leagues, but the team elected for him to start at Triple-A, where he's played exclusively so far. The 23-year-old has appeared in 54 games, slashing .223/.337/.424 with 9 home runs, 35 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
It's painfully clear how much Cruz's production at the plate and playmaking on the bases could give Pittsburgh a serious push heading into the dregs of summer baseball. The Pirates currently sit at 25-39, and they'll need some help if they're to turn around their recent losing woes.
