The Philadelphia Phillies are coming off of their first National League pennant since 2009 and have their eyes set on improving the roster for 2023. Reports suggest those improvements may be started with the signing of a free-agent shortstop. MLB insider Jon Heyman linked the team to Xander Bogaerts.

Philadelphia Phillies Free Agency

The Phillies declined Jean Segura's $17 million club option, suddenly opening up a hole in the middle of the infield. It's why Philadelphia has been linked to Bogaerts as well as Trea Turner, Carlos Correa and Dansby Swanson in free agency rumors. Adding a pro like that could put this team over the top.

The reasoning behind a pairing between Bogaerts and Philadelphia is clear. Dave Dombrowski now serves at the Phillies president of baseball operations after spending the early part of his career as an executive in Boston. He played a role in helping the Red Sox sign Bogaerts to an extension in 2019.

Bogaerts has been the definition of consistency throughout his career. His on-base percentage has checked in at .360 or above in each of the last five seasons and he has smacked 105 home runs during that span. Bogaerts' 84 runs scored in 2022 would've ranked second among Phillies hitters.

The Phillies already have the third-highest payroll for the 2023 season and Bogaerts' latest contract projection features an average annual salary of $28 million. However, this front office has shown a willingness to go over the luxury tax line if it means putting the team in a better position to win.

For now, the Phillies have odds set at +1600 to win the 2023 World Series, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
