The Philadelphia Phillies have struggled to put together a reliable bullpen for the last few seasons and the news just seems to keep getting worse. The team is now set to lose one of its better relief pitchers in Sam Coonrod as he was placed on the 10-day injured list due to right forearm tendinitis.
Philadelphia Phillies News
Coonrod was an offseason trade acquisition by Philadelphia and he has been one of their most consistent options out of the bullpen in 2021. Overall, he has posted a 4.18 ERA and 1.286 WHIP in 27 appearances to go along with 2 saves and 4 games finished. He has also struck out 30 batters in 28.0 innings pitched.
It is unclear the exact severity Coonrod's injury, but the Phillies have made his IL stint retroactive to June 24th. However, this is a setback that usually last at least a few weeks. A further update on the hard-throwing 28-year-old righty should be released by the team within the next few days.
Relief pitcher Neftali Feliz is set to join the Phillies roster in a corresponding move. The 33-year-old righty hasn't played in the major leagues since 2017, but has been exceptional down at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season. In fact, Feliz has posted a 1.26 ERA and converted 4 saves across 14.1 innings pitched.
The Phillies are still in the hunt for the NL East title and currently sit 5.0 games back of the New York Mets with a 34-37 record. Philadelphia remains a long shot to win the World Series with odds set at +6000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
