The MLB lockout may be ongoing, but that hasn't stopped teams from turning their attention to the offseason.
The Baltimore Orioles have emerged as the favorite to land an exciting Cuban prospect named Cesar Prieto. He is expected to sign with the team when the international signing period begins on January 15.
The Orioles have shown in the past that they are not afraid to go after international free agents. General Manager Mike Elias has always been aggressive in that aspect of the game given it is a cheap way to acquire talent. The signing amount is expected to be somewhere between $650K and $750K.
The 22-year-old shined during the Cuban National Series, slashing .403/.463/.579 across 360 plate appearances. Prieto's skillset includes an ability to hit for power in the gaps and steal bases using his elite speed. He has played mostly as a second baseman when in the field.
Prieto also has a knack for racking up hits and strikes out less than the average rate. He has a chance to quickly rise up Baltimore's system due to their pure lack of depth. After all, the Orioles put up just 4.07 runs per game during the 2021 season, which ranked as the fifth-lowest mark in the MLB.
Baltimore will look to turn things around with a ton of young players and Prieto acts as another low-cost, high-upside option. The Orioles currently have the worst odds to win the American League at +15000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
