Despite dealing with a rash of injuries, the New York Mets have gotten out to a tremendous start to the 2022 campaign. The team opened the year with a 37-19 record, boasting an 8.5-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. And the future appears to be even brighter.

MLB insider and prospect evaluator extraordinaire Kiley McDaniel believes that Mets' prospect Francisco Alvarez is the best in baseball, as he touched on for a column on ESPN.

Right now, I think Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez is the best prospect currently in the minor leagues.

The 20-year-old is mashing in Double-A. He's slashing .274/.342/.514 with 10 home runs and 28 RBI through 199 plate appearances for Binghamton in 2022. He's poised to eventually take over James McCann's post at the MLB level; McCann slashed .227/.290/.341 with 11 home runs and 52 RBI in 142 games over the last two seasons for NYM.

Mets fans shouldn't get too ahead of themselves just yet, though. Alvarez is unlikely to make his MLB debut this season and it's anyone's guess as to when he'll officially get called up.

He'd have a much more realistic shot at getting some time in the bigs this year if the Mets weren't World Series contenders, as New York might not want to throw a rookie into the fire. But that's a trade-off Mets fans are surely happy about.

New York is currently tied for the third-best World Series odds at +750 on FanDuel Sportsbook. The Mets are also heavily favored to win the NL East (-390) and make the postseason (-3500).

And if Alvarez is the prospect McDaniel believes him to be, things could stay that way for years to come.
