The New York Mets have dominated the 2022 season, owning the best record (47-29) and fourth-best run differential (+57) in the National League. What makes that so scary for opposing teams is the fact that pitching ace Max Scherzer is nearing a return after a successful rehab start on Wednesday.

Max Scherzer injury Update

It was Scherzer's second appearance for the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies. He allowed a pair of earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks, while logging 8 strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. The 37-year-old was stretched to 80 pitches and told reporters after the game that he is ready for the next step.

“I felt good out there. I was able to work through some traffic. I’m good to go.”

Max Scherzer on his rehab start

Scherzer has been out since mid-May with a left oblique strain and has been taking the recovery process both seriously and carefully. He will be coming back to a Mets team that has posted the second-best record in the sport since he went down (22-14), trailing only the Atlanta Braves (26-11).

The impending return of an eight-time All-Star will send veteran Trevor Williams back into a long-man role in the bullpen after he filled in for six turns. Overall, Scherzer is 5-1 on the season with a 2.54 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. He has also racked up 59 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched (8 starts).

Keep an eye on any updates from the Mets regarding when Scherzer will take the mound. For now, they have the fourth-best odds to win the World Series at +700, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
