The New York Mets had a great regular season, but faltered in the playoffs and went home early. Now, they will look to retool in 2022 with starting pitching being by far their biggest need.

Jon Heyman is reporting that the Mets would still like to bring back starter Jacob deGrom, but if he chooses to sign elsewhere they will also be in on Justin Verlander or Carlos Rodon, along with other middle-to-back-end rotation guys.

Figuring out who will play center field for the Mets next year is another thing near the top of their offseason to-do list. The only problem, the center field market is pretty weak if the team is unable to re-sign Brandon Nimmo. Pirates star Bryan Reynolds is the top player perceived to be available, but that is via trade and he won't be cheap.

Mets Center Field Plans 2023

The Mets backup plan is a guy already on their roster, veteran Starling Marte.

Marte played both right and center field for the Mets last season, so they have had a look at him there and seem to be content with the job he can do.

Marte's bat was key to the Mets' success last season, slashing .292/.347/.468 last season with 16 home runs and 63 RBI in 118 games. Next year they might be relying even more heavily on his defensive potential as well.

This should be a busy offseason for the Mets, but center field might be a position they solve in house.
