It's safe to say the last few weeks have been a whirlwind for quarterback Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. The veteran's return to the team came with an impressive two-touchdown performance off the bench back in Week 10, but things have been going downhill ever since.
Head coach Matt Rhule has been adamant that Newton is the starter when healthy, though. In fact, he has already confirmed that notion for Week 14. This may come as a surprise given Newton spent the entirety of the fourth quarter on the sidelines during a blowout loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
Rhule explained that Newton was benched in order to avoid taking on anymore unnecessary hits, yet it's hard to justify his performance on the field. He failed to find a connection with any of his receivers, completing just 5 of his 21 pass attempts for 92 yards. Newton also tossed 2 costly interceptions.
The Panthers enter their bye week looking to stay in the hunt for an NFC Wild Card spot. It's hard to believe that will happen with Newton leading the offense, though. The former NFL MVP has now lost 10 straight starts with the Panthers dating back to 2019 and is not using his legs as efficiently as he once was able to.
Nevertheless, all eyes will be on Newton's performance against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 14 and whether or not he can bounce back with a win. Backup P.J. Walker remains waiting in the wings and has completed 30 of his 54 pass attempts on the season for 287 yards (2 interceptions).
