The Miami Marlins need some help if they're to make a serious push for an NL Wild Card spot. At 30-36, Miami is currently 7.5 games back in that race, and they trail the New York Mets by 13.0 games in the NL East.

Tuesday evening brought news of two veteran additions for the Marlins.

Miami has signed center fielder Billy Hamilton and acquired catcher Ryan Lavarnway in a trade with the Detroit Tigers.

Hamilton is best known as one of MLB's premier speed threats on the bases, recording 314 steals since 2013. He's bounced between teams over the past few seasons, though, due to his lackluster hitting.

Hamilton played 22 games this year for the Seattle Mariners' Triple-A affiliate, slashing .186/.263/.209 with 5 RBIs and 4 steals (0 caught stealing). He opted out of that deal earlier this month, allowing him to latch on with Miami.

Lavarnway has been a journeyman depth option since leaving the Boston Red Sox in 2014. He's appeared in 68 games for seven clubs over the past six seasons, slashing .244/.310/.393 with 4 home runs and 16 RBIs.

This is a mini-reunion of sorts for the Marlins and Lavarnway, who played in five contests for the team in 2020. He'll provide an experienced depth option in Triple-A for Miami to turn to if anything happens to Jacob Stallings or Nick Fortes.
