For all but four teams in the NFL, the focus has shifted to free agency and April's draft. ESPN expert Mel Kiper Jr. released his first 2023 mock draft on Wednesday, giving us his first projections of what will happen with each pick of the first round.
Due to the Matthew Stafford trade, the Detroit Lions own the Los Angeles Rams' first-round pick this year, and it lands at No. 6. The Lions also still have their own pick, and after an encouraging season in 2022, that one is at No. 18.
Lions 2023 Mock Draft
At No. 6, Kiper has the Lions selecting Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson, whom some consider the best prospect at his position in this draft. Kiper points out that Wilson solves multiple problems for the Lions. Detroit struggled on defense last year, both against the pass and the run, which Wilson can help with in both of those areas. He would also create a scary duo on the edge with Aiden Hutchinson for years to come.
At No. 18, Kiper has the Lions going defense again with Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez. He's someone who'd help shore up the pass defense opposite of former No. 3 pick Jeff Okudah.
Gonzalez was a star at Colorado before transfering to Oregon and getting even better, turning into a ballhawk that snagged four interceptions in 2022 for the Ducks. Even if Okudah doesn't grow into his expected full potential, Gonzalez provides the Lions another potential lockdown corner to either support Okudah or replace him.
