The New York Mets held an introductory press conference to welcome superstar free agent Justin Verlander to his new squad. Verlander signed a massive $86.7 million contract (for two years) with New York earlier this month.
The new Mets' ace fielded a number of questions surrounding his offseason, free agency and new squad. He also revealed exactly what role Jacob deGrom played in the process.
Many fans may have assumed this to be true, but to hear it directly from Verlander's mouth was pretty momentous.
Verlander told press that he and the franchise agreed they would wait until deGrom's free agency played out before making his own decision. "He's iconic here. I don't think it's fair to him or to me to make that decision before he made his decision."
It certainly leaves an alternate reality where deGrom stuck in New York and Verlander opted to take his talents elsewhere. But, the dust settled and Verlander steps in as the new ace of the Mets' rotation for at least the next two years. This is a World Series or bust mentality for Steve Cohen and his roster.
