The 2022 regular season was certainly a dramatic ride for All-Star catcher Willson Contreras. Subject to trade rumors since the very first pitch of the season, the Chicago Cubs backstop endured an entire season's worth of speculation.

With the regular season over, Contreras is about to enter unrestricted free agency. Considered one of the better two-way catchers in baseball, the 30-year-old will be in high demand this winter.

One team in particular, however, would be a gut punch to Cubs fans if Contreras decides to sign there.

Willson Contreras Cardinals Rumors

Reports earlier this week suggested the seven-year veteran reached out to a friend on the St. Louis Cardinals inquiring about the team culture. That friend was Cardinals Game 1 starter Jose Quintana.

Quintana didn't do Chicago's fanbase any favors by strongly recommending St. Louis. He doubled down on the question himself, affirming that he wants to remain with the Cardinals as well after being traded there from the Pittsburgh Pirates in August. Quintana is also betraying the Cubs to some degree after playing there from 2017-2020.

The thought of Contreras leaving in free agency is already a nightmare for Chicago fans, but having him join their fiercest rivals would make it even worse.
