The New York Mets are in a tight race with the Atlanta Braves to win the NL East. With just a few weeks left in the season, the Mets hold the slimmest of 0.5 games lead over Atlanta.

Regardless of the standings, the Mets have put together a stellar season thus far, sitting at 89-54, despite dealing with plenty of injuries this season.

Part of the reason the Mets have been able to maintain such success has been the impressive work of closer Edwin Diaz. He has 29 saves this season and has done it to the tune of a 1.47 ERA and an insane 105 strikeouts in just 55 innings pitched. He has been, in one word, dominant.

Edwin Diaz Free Agency

Diaz is set to become a free agent this offseason, and ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan expects him to reset the market for premium relief pitchers. Passan predicts we could see Diaz be the first reliever to sign for $100 million.

Diaz is still just 28 years old and in his prime, expected to continue at this level or even improve on his game, but paying someone $20 million per year or more for around 60 innings per season can create some major sticker shock. And if he ever declines, all of a sudden it becomes a bad contract.

Mets owner Steve Cohen can afford a bad contract or a few, but it's still not something he's hoping for.

It will be interesting to see where Diaz's market falls come to this offseason, especially if he becomes a crucial part of a Mets playoff run.

The Mets are currently +500 to win the World Series, good enough for the third-best odds in baseball, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
