During the opening days of NBA Free Agency, Woj bombs were being tossed in every direction, but the Boston Celtics often found themselves mentioned in the moves. And despite acquiring Kemba Walker, the Celtics' odds to win the 2020 NBA Finals have dropped, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
The Celtics opened at +1600 to win the 2020 NBA Finals, but after losing Kyrie Irving and Al Horford, Boston dropped to +2300, even after signing Kemba and Enes Kanter.
However, Boston's drop in odds may have more to do with the incoming talent in the Eastern Conference than it does with the Celtics. The Philadelphia 76ers (+1600) lost Jimmy Butler, but signed Horford and traded for Josh Richardson. The 76ers can now trot out one of the longest starting fives in the NBA.
The Milwaukee Bucks also look poised to contend once again after retaining most of their key players other than Malcolm Brogdon, who signed with the much-improved Indiana Pacers squad (+5500). The Brooklyn Nets (+2100) are another potential contender, following the acquisition of Irving and Kevin Durant.
While the Eastern Conference is much improved, it would be a mistake to rule out the Celtics. Boston is still one of the most talented teams in the East, and could be contenders if Gordon Hayward returns to full strength, and if Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown make a leap.
If one thing is for certain, it's that Danny Ainge is never done making moves. With Kemba leading the way, the Celtics have a path to contention if Ainge can add another proven big man, and if players like Hayward, Tatum and Brown take another step forward.
