The Houston Astros' start to the 2022 MLB season hasn't exactly gone as planned. After making the 2021 World Series, the Astros are an uninspiring 6-6 after 12 games and currently rank fourth in the AL West Division.

Baseball experts have taken notice of the Astros' slow start, made evident by ESPN's latest MLB power rankings. Houston started off at the No. 2 spot last week, only to fall four spots to No. 6 on Thursday.

Houston Astros Power Ranking

The Astros are, without a doubt, a World Series-quality team that has gotten off to an unfortunate start. There are still 150 games to prove themselves, which is why the fanbase might feel disrespected by the power rankings change.

Run control has been one of the Astros' biggest obstacles lately. After giving up only 11 runs in their first five games this season, they've allowed 37 over the subsequent seven — including at least six in three of the last four outings.

The good news is that Justin Verlander has been one of Houston's bright spots on the mound. The two-time AL Cy Young winner is 1-1 with a 0.69 ERA and 0.692 WHIP in two starts following his return from injury. Continued play at that level and improvements from the rest of the rotation will be important in helping the Astros turn things around.

The Astros also need more production from their bats if they want to get back on track. They're in the bottom 10 when it comes to hits (No. 7) and runs scored (No. 10), which will make it tougher to win games, regardless of how the pitchers are performing.

Fortunately, oddsmakers haven't written off the Astros just yet. Fans will be happy to know that they still have the third-best odds (+1000) to win the 2022 World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
