The Atlanta Falcons suffered a disappointing home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 13, dropping Atlanta to 5-8 on the season. Quarterback Marcus Mariota put up another lackluster performance, and against a bottom-half defense.
Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Change
While Arthur Smith has indicated in recent weeks it wasn't panic time in terms of a quarterback change, he might be changing his tune on that.
When asked about the possibility of change moving forward, Smith said:
"It's a unique time. We're about to go into the bye. We'll evaluate everything. Every job is open."- Falcons Head Coach Arthur Smith
With the addition of an extra game in the schedule, bye weeks are now going deeper into the season and Atlanta has one in Week 14. Having the extra time off will allow them to give everything a good evaluation, and if a change is needed, the time to integrate a new QB.
Rookie Desmond Ridder is the obvious choice to consider. Atlanta could end up with a top pick in a draft that is expected to have four or five quarterbacks go in the first round in 2023. They need to know if targeting one of those guys is a priority, or if they actually have something in the former Cincinnati QB.
Ridder has yet to take a snap in the NFL, so if the Falcons do decide to give him a shot, he will need as much prep time as possible. Making this decision early in the two weeks they have before their next game could be crucial.
The Falcons have a Week 15 matchup with the New Orleans Saints scheduled following their bye.
