2020 has not been kind to anyone, but it's been a particularly tough year for the New York Jets. The anemic offense is averaging just 13.8 points per game – by far the worst in the league – and the Jets are still the NFL's only winless team.

Rather than take the bullet for his players, head coach Adam Gase decided to throw quarterback Sam Darnold under the bus.

That's a pretty brutal indictment of Darnold's performance this season. And to Gase's credit, he has a point. Darnold has league-worst numbers in terms of: passer rating (64.0), quarterback rating (36.5), adjusted yards per attempt (4.3) and yards per attempt (5.7). He's also got the second-highest interception percentage (3.7%) in the NFL.

But as everyone knows by this point, Gase deserves a good chunk of the blame for that. There's a pretty long list of players who struggled under Gase but thrived once they escaped, like Ryan Tannehill, Kenyan Drake and DeVante Parker, just to name a few.

Darnold is still just 23 years old. He's younger than Joe Burrow. There's clearly some untapped potential with the USC product, and even though he's struggled, Gase should be going to bat for his quarterback – or at least making a semblance of an effort to.

Because at this point, it's looking like Darnold will be joining the long list of players who finally showed their potential once they escaped Gase's clutches.
