Even though the Buffalo Bills didn't have a first-round pick, they still managed to land an extremely talented defender. With the No. 54 overall selection, Buffalo drafted A.J. Epenesa, who has racked up a combined 22.0 sacks and 30.5 tackles for loss over the past two seasons at Iowa.
While Epenesa's lack of athleticism caused him to drop a bit, his odds to win the 2020 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, provided by FanDuel Sportsbook, suggest he could hit the ground running in Buffalo.
Odds to Win Defensive Rookie of the Year Award 2020
Despite being the 25th defensive player drafted, Epenesa (+1300) has the third-best odds to take home Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. He only trails Chase Young (+350) and Isaiah Simmons (+850). Interestingly, both players were top-10 picks.
To be fair, Epenesa's ranking could have a lot to do with the type of player that typically wins this award. Players in the front seven have won eight of the last 10 Defensive Rookie of the Year awards, with the two outliers going to cornerbacks.
That could help explain why Jeff Okudah (+2100), the No. 3 overall pick, is so much further down the list than some of the other players in the class.
Regardless, Epenesa looks like an absolute steal. He was the No. 20 overall player on Pro Football Focus' big board, and a potential Rookie of the Year candidate all the way down at No. 54 is an incredible value.
