Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has broken numerous records since getting that one spot start in Week 17 of the 2017 season at Denver. But after five games of this current season, he put himself in elite company with the likes of Cam Newton, Mark Bulger and Andrew Luck.

And who would have guessed that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens would be the next one to join that historic list?

No one expected much out of Mullens this season, but a favorable matchup against the Oakland Raiders on a Thursday night in Week 9, where he threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns, made his transition to the NFL a bit easier. Including that game, in his first six games as the starter Mullens has thrown for 250 yards in five of them. Over the last three games, he's averaged more than 340 yards a contest.

Not only has Mullens done well individually, but he has led the 49ers to a 3-3 record as the team's starting quarterback. Over the past two weeks, San Fran has knocked off two teams vying for the playoffs in the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. This week, they draw the Chicago Bears in another difficult matchup.

Amazingly, it's probably right back to the bench for Mullens once Jimmy Garoppolo is healthy again next season. Even so, the rookie QB out of Southern Miss has proven he can play with the big boys and has a shot to be a starter again at some point down the line.
