3 Undefeated Teams Primed to Blow College Football Playoff Bids

Now that an entire half of the college football season has come and gone, we can finally start to build legitimate cases against a handful of currently undefeated, top-10 teams. That's right, against them, since they'll start falling off one-by-one as the College Football Playoff picture comes into focus.

Here are three undefeated teams that won't see their names called for the final Top 4 CFP rankings.

3. No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs (6-0)

The Bulldogs may come as somewhat of a surprise here because I do believe they're truly the second- or third-best team in the country. However, they do have the toughest path to the College Football Playoff in the country as well. If they win out in the SEC East, like they're expected to, they'll almost certainly have to go through Alabama in the SEC Championship (i.e. the final game of the season before the official CFP selections are made) and, depending on what happens to other teams with a similar record, losing that final résumé-building game could prove to be detrimental.

2. No. 6 West Virginia Mountaineers (5-0)

I'll be the first to admit that watching the West Virginia Mountaineers climb to No. 6 in the latest AP Poll is one of the best stories in college football this year. But at the end of the day, it's still West Virginia we're talking about here. Heisman-hopeful quarterback Will Grier is the best WVU's had in recent memory, but just say this out loud: West Virginia, College Football Playoff. I don't think so.

1. No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-0)

This is a story we've all seen too many times. In fact, the classic 6-0 start to Notre Dame's season followed by an utter crash-and-burn finish to miss the College Football Playoff has become so predictable that it's boring. They're certainly a more legitimate contender with quarterback Ian Book under center (rather than Brandon Wimbush), but the Fighting Irish have to go undefeated on the season without a conference title to contend, and they're almost certainly going to blow at least one of their 12 games, like they always do.
