We've reached the home stretch of the MLB season with teams clinching playoff spots and magic numbers shrinking every day. Let's look at two teams that we will likely see playing in October in a few short weeks.
Game 1: Cincinnati Reds (+158) @ Milwaukee Brewers (-178), 7:40 p.m. EST
The Brew Crew are currently leading the NL Wild Card by three games and sit just 2.5 games behind the NL-Central leading Cubs for the division. With just 12 games left in the regular season, every game is essentially a must-win for a team that hasn't qualified for the playoffs since 2011. They'll send Wade Miley to the mound tonight against a Reds team he's dominated this season, allowing just two runs in 13 1/3 innings against Cincy this year. That 1.35 ERA and 0.90 WHIP outpace his equally-impressive career numbers against them -- 4-2 record, 3.14 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. Miley also hasn't lost in his five starts at home this season while his counterpart, Anthony DeSclafani, is 1-2 with 4.05 ERA in three starts at Miller Park.
Game 2: Seattle Mariners (+152) @ Houston Astros (-172), 8:10 p.m. EST
Somehow the Astros haven't clinched the AL West yet. A division they've seemingly led all season, the 'Stros are up 4.5 games with 13 to play and their Magic Number still sits at nine, despite winning eight of their last 10.
Rookie Framber Valdez will take the mound for Houston, having won his lone start against Seattle, giving up just one unearned run and two hits in his debut. Pitching at Minute Maid Park is another perk for the left-hander, who has a 1.74 ERA in two starts at his home ballpark. The Mariners' Wade LeBlanc, on the other hand, has a 6.14 ERA in three starts (five appearances) at Minute Maid Park in his career, as well as an 8.31 ERA in three starts (five appearances) against the Astros this season.
