The San Francisco 49ers put together a second-half comeback to win Sunday's preseason game by a score of 15-10 over the Los Angeles Chargers. However, it wasn't all good news as the team suffered some concerning defensive depth injuries to Maurice Hurst and Mychal Kendricks.
Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst went down with an ankle injury during his fourth snap of the game and was unable to return for the rest of the night. The fourth-year pro is fighting for a roster spot after racking up 27 tackles, 6 quarterback hits and 0.5 sacks in 11 games played in 2020.
Meanwhile, linebacker Mychal Kendricks exited the contest after injuring his toe while working on the special teams unit. The veteran playmaker was signed for depth purposes and looking to make an impact in San Francisco. Kendricks has posted 548 tackles and 19.0 sacks over nine NFL seasons.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed that both players will be evaluated further on Monday to determine the extent of their injuries. The 49ers have to hope that neither one is forced to miss a lot of time as defensive depth is crucial to a team that gave up 24.4 points per game last season (No. 17 in NFL).
San Francisco heads into the fall with high hopes and remains one of the favorites to make a deep playoff run. The 49ers currently have the best odds to win the NFC West division at +190 and the third-best odds to earn the NFC Conference crown at +650, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
