The San Francisco 49ers' bad injury luck appears to have continued into the 2021 campaign. Just one week into the NFL season and this team is already down key starters including cornerback Jason Verrett and running back Raheem Mostert.

Third-year linebacker Dre Greenlaw now joins this list. After sitting out of Thursday's practice, Greenlaw will have to undergo groin surgery and subsequently miss 4-6 weeks.

Dre Greenlaw Injury Update

The 2019 fifth-round draft pick has been an important piece in San Francisco's defense front for the past two years. He started 22 games (29 appearances) over his first two seasons, racking up 178 combined tackles, 2.0 sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

Greenlaw was a highlight in the 49ers' Week 1 win over the Lions, flying all over the field for 6 combined tackles (4 solo) and a 39-yard pick-six.

It's fortunate the 49ers were able to avoid a season-ending update from Greenlaw, but his absence will be missed. Azeez Al-Shaair is expected to take over as Greenlaw's role at weakside linebacker.

San Francisco is a 3-point road favorite against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
