Patrick Mahomes continued his dominance in the month of September with another commanding win in Week 1. His 360 passing yards and 5 passing touchdowns guided the Kansas City Chiefs to a 44-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The team is riding high heading into Week 2.
Week 2 presents a much tougher matchup, though, as a Thursday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Chargers is on tap. NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook list the Chiefs as 4.5-point home favorites, so let's take a look at three reasons Kansas City will be able to secure another blowout win.
Chiefs vs Chargers Week 2
1. A Deep Arsenal of Weapons
Mahomes was undoubtedly the star on Sunday as he tossed one perfect pass after another and confused the heck out of the Cardinals defense. It's important to note how many weapons he has at his disposal, though. Tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster combined for 200 yards on 14 receptions. Meanwhile, Clyde Edwards-Helaire scored 2 receiving touchdowns and rookie wideout Skyy Moore hauled in a 30-yard pass. Marquez Valdes-Scantling totaled 44 yards on 4 catches as Mecole Hardman and Jody Fortson both logged touchdowns as well. The Chiefs have enough depth on offense to beat any team in the NFL.
2. Chargers' Disappointing Rushing Attack
The Chargers found themselves ahead on the scoreboard for almost the entirety of their Week 1 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. That's usually a recipe for running backs to receive a ton of carries and work the clock. LA struggled in that department, though, posting only 76 yards on the ground across 31 carries (2.5-yard average). Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley and Sony Michel now have to face a Kansas City defense that gave up just 54 rushing yards on 14 carries (3.9-yard average) to RBs in Week 1. The Chiefs have also held Ekeler to 38.6 rushing yards per game in his nine career contests against them. He's in for a long night on Thursday.
3. Patrick Mahomes
It was already mentioned above how dominant Mahomes was in Week 1. However, it wasn't mentioned how dominant he has been against the Chargers in his career. The 26-year-old has thrown for 1,827 yards, 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions against his AFC West rival across seven matchups. Mahomes' 235 career rushing yards against LA is also his highest mark against any NFL team he has faced. His ability to scramble out of the pocket and pick up first downs will certainly frustrate the Chargers on national television. All signs point to Mahomes improving to 6-2 against his divisional foe.
