The Miami Dolphins finished 10-6 in 2020, but failed to make the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. They are a young team with a lot of potential and could make a lot of noise next season if they make a few key free agent acquisitions in the offseason.

One area on the roster they could upgrade is the running back position. It's never a bad idea to build up depth and balance in the backfield. With that in mind, here are three free agent running backs the Dolphins should sign for the 2021 NFL season.

1. Aaron Jones

If the Dolphins really want to make a splash in the offseason and show other teams they are not messing around, they should sign Aaron Jones. Jones has been one of the best running backs in the NFL over the last few seasons and just averaged a career-high 78.9 rushing yards per game in 2020 with the Green Bay Packers. He's proven he has what it takes to be a workhorse running back and carry offense to the end zone. Signing Jones would lock up the running back spot for the foreseeable future and take the Dolphins' already solid offense to another level.

2. Mike Davis

Another running back looking to profit off of an impressive 2020 season is veteran running back Mike Davis. Stepping in for an injured Christian McCaffrey, Davis racked up 642 yards on 165 carries and scored 6 touchdowns last season. Signing Davis is one way the Dolphins can build depth without having to spend a lot of money. Plus, having Davis become the starter would allow the Dolphins to keep giving snaps to their young running backs like Salvon Ahmed and Myles Gaskin when necessary. Simply put, signing an underrated rusher in Davis could help the Dolphins out in more ways than one.

3. Todd Gurley

If the Dolphins want to take a risk this offseason and try to capitalize on some upside, then Todd Gurley is the player they should target. Gurley is coming off of the worst season in his career as he rushed for 678 yards on 195 carries and scored 9 touchdowns in 2020 as an Atlanta Falcon. However, he put up over 1,000 rushing yards as recent as the 2018 season and could use this change of scenery to his advantage. Who knows, maybe Gurley is able to return to form and be a top running back once again. Nevertheless, it may be worth the risk considering the low price Gurley will likely sign for.
