Earlier this offseason, Eagles tight end Zach Ertz made it pretty clear that he wanted Philadelphia to trade or release him. Fast forward to the end of August and the veteran still remains on the roster with no signs of movement coming any time soon.
However, Ertz and fellow tight end Dallas Goedert have been working with sophomore gunslinger Jalen Hurts a lot throughout training camp. In fact, multiple reports seem to suggest that the older TE is becoming one of Hurts' favorite targets.
It sure seems like he has some sleeper potential ahead of the 2021 fantasy football season.
Zach Ertz Fantasy Outlook
There was about a five- or six-year stretch where Ertz was one of the NFL's tight ends. Unfortunately, he put up the worst performance of his career last year. Ertz finished the 2020 season with 36 receptions for 335 receiving yards and a touchdown, as well as career-worsts in yards per target (4.7) and catch percentage (50.0%).
But it'll be interesting to see what impact head coach Nick Sirianni has on the Eagles offense. As the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts between 2018 and 2020, Sirianni loved getting his tight ends involved. The Colts ran 305 multiple tight end sets in 2020, which ranked 10th-most in the NFL, while the Eagles ran 295 (12th).
It's not a huge difference, but it does show that Ertz and Goedert could see more work going forward.
Zach Ertz ADP
At the end of the day, the tight end position is remarkably weak once you get past the few elite options. Sometimes it's just about throwing something at the wall and seeing what sticks, and Ertz does offer some low-end TE1 potential if everything breaks his way.
Zach Ertz is listed as TE19 on FantasyPros, with an average draft position (ADP) of 170.8. He doesn't crack the top 20 in The Duel's fantasy football rankings, but he could be a name to monitor at the beginning of the season.
