The Minnesota Viking were doomed by an ineffective pass defense that gave up the fifth-most passing yards per game in the NFL last season (252.9). New head coach Kevin O'Connell needs defensive playmakers and Todd McShay has the Vikings taking one in his latest NFL mock draft.

Vikings Mock Draft

McShay projects Minnesota to select cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. with the 12th overall pick. That should be considered a major steal given the fact that the LSU standout sneaks into the top 10 in a ton of other mock drafts. Grabbing him without having to move up would be a first-round home run.

Stingley struggled to stay healthy during his last two college seasons, but has undeniable talent in coverage. The 20-year-old racked up 73 tackles (7.0 for loss), 20 pass breakups, 6 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles across 25 games with the Tigers. His versatility shined on every given snap.

Yes, the Vikings were able to re-sign CB Patrick Peterson this offseason. The depth behind him is lacking to say the least, though. Free agent signing Chandon Sullivan allowed a 65.7% completion percentage in 2021 and Cameron Dantzler was regularly burned by speedy opposing receivers.

Stingley has all the makings of a shutdown corner capable of blanketing pass-catchers anywhere on the field. Think about the impact he can make being mentored by one of the most experienced players in the game, too. Peterson's knowledge could go a long way in helping Stingley adjust.

The 2022 NFL Draft is set to get underway on Thursday, April 28.
