There are losing games on bad walk-off plays and then there's this: the Oakland Athletics loss to the Houston Astros in 2018.

What starts as an Alex Bregman dribbler off the end of the bat quickly becomes a victory for the Astros and agony for the A's as catcher Jonathan Lucroy really makes a mess out of this one.

All he has to do is tag Bregman, whose path to first base is completely blocked off by Lucroy, but he inexplicably loses his grip on the baseball as he bobbles it off the home plate umpire. Then, despite the embarrassing moment, all the catcher has to do is throw the ball to first, with ample time to do so.

As fate would have it, the ball glances off Bregman's helmet as he sprints down the line, allowing the base-runner to score on the errant throw. That just shows that you should never give up on a play. Bregman didn't, and he was rewarded by Lucroy's unlikely mistakes.
