Ty Montgomery Fantasy Value Could Be Higher Than Just a Le'Veon Bell Handcuff in 2019

Ty Montgomery's signing with the New York Jets wasn't met with much fanfare this offseason. The team already had its workhorse lead back in Le'Veon Bell, and Montgomery looked like a redundant addition with incumbents Elijah McGuire, Trenton Cannon and Bilal Powell all boasting solid receiving chops out of the backfield.

Montgomery has clearly made an impression with the Jets' coaching staff through training camp and the preseason though, taking a firm grasp of the No. 2 spot on the RB depth chart.

With Bell not playing in the preseason, Montgomery has absolutely dominated the first-team reps in the backfield.

Especially interesting is that Montgomery's value looks like it could extend past simply being a handcuff to Le'Veon Bell. There are reports that Montgomery could split work with Bell early in the season as Bell works himself back into game shape now that he is almost two years removed from his last NFL game.

That means Montgomery's value shines in two ways now. First, not many handcuffs pick up true workhorse roles when the starter in front of them goes down. Early indications are that Montgomery would do just that.

Second is that Montgomery could also open the season with a few fantasy-relevant weeks. A former wide receiver, he could be especially valuable in PPR leagues where short, easy receptions out of the backfield can create a solid floor for fantasy scoring. If he impresses in this time, his versatility could also make it easier for the Jets to keep him on the field alongside Bell on passing downs as the season goes on.

He's still not someone you're likely to be starting in typical 12-team leagues over those first few weeks of the season. But his average draft position (ADP) of RB65, per FantasyPros.com, is cheap enough that you can afford to stash him as a handcuff with additional stand-alone upside.

Montgomery is an especially appealing pick in deeper PPR and best-ball leagues, where there's the added bonus that his early-season role could earn him a place in your lineup.
