The Chicago Cubs haven't come close in the NL Central race each of the past two seasons, but the franchise is poised to spend big this offseason. Chicago enters the offseason approximately $125 million under the luxury tax threshold and all indication is the franchise will spend big in free agency.
Those rumors only stirred deeper upon a report from MLB insider Jon Morosi. Morosi joined MLB Network to discuss the franchise's offseason plan and named two superstar shortstops as their top free agent targets.
Morosi explained the Cubs are "involved in all the main shortstops out there," and "broadly active in the shortstop market." That includes the four top free agents at the position in Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts and Dansby Swanson.
Of that list, Morosi indicates the Cubs are showing the most interest in Correa and Turner. Thankfully, the two best names on that list of four. Morosi cited the Cubs' interest in Correa a year ago before his short-term deal with the Minnesota Twins. The interest goes both ways as Correa's shown a longtime affinity for the Cubs.
He ends the segment with a promising statement for Cubs nation. "This is the offseason which we see the Cubs truly behaving like the large market team that they are."
