The San Francisco 49ers have an important decision to make after spending a number of draft resources to move up to the No. 3 pick. The predominant thought has been that the choice is between Ohio State's Justin Fields and Alabama's Mac Jones, with North Dakota State's Trey Lance a distant third in the race.
Now Lance appears to be a major contender. His odds to be the No. 3 pick on FanDuel Sportsbook have surged up to +210, significantly closing the gap on Jones (+180) and Fields (-125). Even if the Ohio State QB is still the favorite, Lance's rise in odds is notable.
Trey Lance NFL Draft Odds
Fields emerged as the favorite to be San Francisco's pick last week, followed by Jones (-105), while Lance rounded out the top three at +650. He's gone from distant option to real threat.
The shifting nature of the odds reflects the uncertainty around who the Niners will select. Fields is regarded by a majority of experts as the next-best QB after Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson. And Jones is seen as the one who could have an impact right away.
Then there's Lance, whose potential is enough to intrigue teams. When he last played a full season in 2019, the NDSU product threw for 2,786 yards, 28 TDs and 0 INTs. His dual-threat ability was on display as well with 1,100 yards on the ground and another 14 scores.
It's widely been theorized that Lance could use a year or two of development before jumping in at the next level. That could make him a prime target for the 49ers, who still have incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo on the roster and aren't actively exploring trades for him yet. Lance could train as his successor and even step in if the injury-plagued QB goes down again in 2021.
