Trade Rumors Link Padres to Two Biggest Names on Market

The San Diego Padres are looking to add at the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline. This team has managed to take charge in the Wild Card race despite the season-long absence of star Fernando Tatis Jr., so it's clear they have the makings of an October contender.
Bringing in a big name would give San Diego the boost it needs to finish the second half strong, and it turns out they've checked in on two of the most notable targets ahead of the deadline.

Padres Trade Rumors
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports the Padres have explored the availability of Shohei Ohtani and Frankie Montas as the deadline draws closer. Nabbing one more ace to solidify this rotation could pay huge dividends as this team hopes to contend for a World Series title this postseason.
"The Padres’ A.J. Preller is among the general managers who typically explore pursuits of every big name, so perhaps it’s no surprise that, according to sources, he has checked in on the Angels’ Shohei Ohtani and the Athletics’ Frankie Montas."
- Ken Rosenthal, The Athletic
Rosenthal also notes it's clear San Diego wants a starting pitcher with at least another season of club control. Sean Manaea, Joe Musgrove and Mike Clevinger all could become potential free agents after the year, so it'd be important to bring in someone who won't be in the same situation heading into 2023.
Ohtani would be a franchise-changing acquisition, but Montas is a nice consolation prize as well if the Los Angeles Angels wait to deal their dual threat. Montas owns a 3.18 ERA across 104.2 innings this season, racking up 109 strikeouts while giving up just 28 walks.
Hopefully the Padres can make some sort of addition to beef up this roster for a second-half run. They currently rank eighth in FanDuel Sportbook's World Series odds at +3000.
