The Detroit Tigers proved they are not afraid to spend some cash after signing both shortstop Javier Baez and pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez to massive contracts prior to the MLB lockout. This team still has a lot of holes to address, though, and would benefit from bringing in more veteran talent.

One area on the roster that is in need of upgrading is in the bullpen. In fact, Detroit's relievers finished with the third-highest ERA in the American league during the 2021 season (4.50). That is why the Tigers should steal right-hander Ryan Tepera away from the divisional rival Chicago White Sox.

Tigers Free Agency

Tepera was originally acquired in a midseason trade and certainly lived up to expectations with the White Sox. He appeared in 22 games over the second half of the year and posted a 2.50 ERA to go along with a 1.11 WHIP. Tepera also struck out an impressive 24 batters in 18.0 innings pitched.

The 34-year-old's consistency on the mound may be his most intriguing quality. Tepera has logged an ERA under 4.00 in six of his seven MLB seasons. That same thing certainly cannot be said about any of Detroit's current projected setup men including Michael Fulmer and Bryan Garcia.

Keep in mind this is the kind of signing that could work out even if the Tigers are well out of playoff contention at the MLB trade deadline. Detroit could deal Tepera to a contending team and gain assets in return that would aid the current rebuild. A win-win move isn't seen very often in today's league.

For now, the Tigers have odds set at +4000 to win the World Series in 2022, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
