The Detroit Tigers have been losing starting pitchers left and right all season and Eduardo Rodriguez is the latest to join the group. The 29-year-old has been placed on the 15-day injured list after suffering a left ribcage sprain during the first inning of his most recent start on May 18.
Eduardo Rodriguez Injury Update
Rodriguez was only able to retire one batter before feeling some discomfort on his left side. The good news is that MRI testing showed no major issues with obliques or intercostal muscles. While no recovery timeline has been set, Rodriguez will not be throwing until at least a week or two into June.
This is yet another huge blow to the Tigers. A number of starting pitchers remain sidelined including the likes of Casey Mize, Matt Manning, Michael Pineda and Spencer Turnbull. Rodriguez was one of just two Detroit pitchers (Tarik Skubal) to make at least five starts in 2022 before going down.
Rodriguez was one of the Tigers' biggest offseason signings after accumulating an impressive 45-19 record from 2018-2021 with the Boston Red Sox. The seventh-year pro has posted a 4.38 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across eight starts this season. He has also struck out 34 batters in 39.0 innings pitched.
Detroit called up right-hander Elvin Rodriguez from Triple-A to take the open roster spot and he is expected to make his first career MLB start on Monday night. The 24-year-old has logged a 3.57 ERA and 1.41 WHIP across six appearances for Toledo (2-1 record, 22.2 innings pitched) in 2022.
The Tigers remains long shots to win the World Series with odds set at +25000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
