A lot of analysts assumed cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.'s draft stock would take a hit after he suffered a Lisfranc injury during his junior season at LSU. The Houston Texans still took him at No. 3 overall, though, and now must wait to see if he will be ready to go by the time training camp starts.

Derek Stingley Jr. Injury Update

General manager Nick Caserio recently appeared on Sports Radio 610 and provided a highly-anticipated update on Stingley's current status. Caserio explained that the young ballhawk still "has some work to do" to be ready by August, but he remains "comfortable" with Houston's selection.

"I think, in the end, we felt comfortable with what the final diagnosis was going to be. I'd say he's certainly working through it this spring."

The Texans certainly liked what they saw out of Stingley's pro day in April and his statistics when healthy back up the hype. The 20-year-old posted 73 tackles (7.0 for loss), 20 pass breakups, 6 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles across three seasons with the Tigers (25 games played).

The capital Houston used to bring Stingley onto the roster is going to make expectations for his future rather high. He could be the centerpiece of this rebuild, but he has to get back to being 100% healthy first. Texans fans are not going to want to wait around for their first-round pick to produce.

All signs point toward Stingley being limited in his first NFL training camp, at least at the beginning. Of course, that could change in the coming months. The Texans aim to make the playoffs for the first time since 2019 and have odds set at +1420 to do so, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
