Tevin Coleman Injury Update Hurts Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert Fantasy Outlook

Tevin Coleman returned to San Francisco 49ers practice on Thursday, getting in his first reps since suffering an ankle injury in Week 1.

The Niners' backfield has been a crowded mess in his absence, with Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. all fighting for touches. Coleman entered 2019 as the team's lead back, and we can expect his return to be a downgrade for each of those other three RBs.

Coleman was the only 49ers back to touch the ball on their first two offensive drives of the season, and in the half of football he played he out-touched Breida eight to five. Mostert and Wilson did not touch the ball before Coleman left the game.

That's a sign that we're still going to see a shared backfield here, but Coleman can be expected to lead the committee while Breida will fall to No. 2.

Breida can still carry fantasy value in that role, but he gets a definite downgrade, while Mostert and Wilson can both safely be dropped once Coleman returns to game action.

Coleman's status for Week 5's "Monday Night Football" game against the Cleveland Browns is still up in the air, so don't go acting on this news just yet. If he sits out then Breida and Mostert will still be viable options for this week.

If Coleman does suit up on Monday, it's probably best for fantasy owners to leave him on their bench and take a wait-and-see approach to the situation unless we get word that he's going to play with no restrictions.

If the 49ers try to ease Coleman back into action, a limited workload could make the backfield an ugly four-headed monster on Monday.
