When the Detroit Lions traded Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and draft picks prior to the 2021 season, the general consensus was that Detroit was the one giving up the franchise quarterback.

After nearly two years together with Goff, however, the Lions apparently believe he could be their quarterback of the future.

While Goff initially appeared to be a stopgap under center until Detroit could draft and develop a new quarterback, his encouraging improvement with the Lions suggests he might stick around awhile.

After several years of decline, the former first overall pick seems to have gotten his career back on track in 2022. Goff has played a key role in Detroit's resurgence this year while helping lead one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL.

While Goff's individual numbers are solid, the biggest key for him has been limiting turnovers and mistakes. He's only been sacked 19 times in 12 games this season after going down 35 times in 14 games last year. The two-time Pro Bowler has also kept his interception rate below 2.0% for the second consecutive season.

After a rough transition from Sean McVay's offense to Dan Campbell's offense, Goff has looked much more comfortable during Year 2 in Detroit. The 28-year-old has also done a good job establishing himself as a veteran leader on a young, raw roster.

Goff had big shoes to fill when he joined the Lions, and so far he's done a pretty good job of filling them.
